My experience in working with couples is that we are all unaware of our triggers from our own family of origin. Once awareness of those triggers is brought out in therapy, you are able to think about how you are going to respond instead react to your partner or spouse.
An example of this is a couple of that recently worked with who would have hurtful verbal fights that would escalate to saying very hurtful things to one another. After 10 sessions both because aware of their triggers and although they were still triggered, chose how to respond or not respond at all.
